Weddings

The Christian wedding is a celebration of a couple's love and commitment to each other and God.

We are honored that you’re considering Old Mission United Methodist Church for your wedding. Whether you are a member of our congregation or not, we warmly welcome all couples to celebrate this sacred and joyful occasion with us. A wedding at Old Mission is a worship service—an opportunity to make a lifelong commitment to one another in the presence of God, with Christ as the foundation of your marriage. The following information is provided to help ensure that your wedding is meaningful, well-organized, and rooted in love and faith.

A Wedding at Old Mission

Your wedding is a sacred celebration that brings together family and friends in a meaningful time of worship. We encourage you to include elements such as responsive readings, prayers, and congregational singing to enrich your ceremony. As you prepare for this special day, please review the following requirements for marriage at Old Mission.
Important Requirements
  • Membership at Old Mission is highly encouraged, not required.
  • Presentation of a properly executed marriage license at the rehearsal is required as the wedding cannot take place without the marriage license. If you are marrying in Kansas, the license must be issued in Kansas. Likewise, if your venue is in Missouri, the license must be issued in Missouri. The pastor can only perform weddings in full accordance with the law. Please do not overlook the necessity for careful compliance.
  • On-Site Weddings are performed on Fridays or Saturdays based on the availability and holiday calendar.

The Final Touches

Your big day is almost here, and all your planning is coming together beautifully. To ensure everything runs smoothly and aligns with Old Mission’s guidelines, the following details will help you prepare for your wedding weekend with confidence and peace of mind.
Building Usage
Limited areas of our facility are available for your wedding use in order for the building to be available for other church functions.  Specifically, the building use fee on the attached schedule of fees permits the use of the Sanctuary (including sacristy and Narthex), two individual rooms for the wedding couple and attendants, for a period of time not to exceed a total of 5 hours on the day of the ceremony and the Sanctuary only no more than 1.5 hours for rehearsal.  Any additional space or time required must be pre-arranged with the clergy, church administrator and the church wedding coordinator, and additional fees will be required since it restricts the use of the building by others.

In addition, please be advised, the rooms are for touching up make-up and hair and changing into outfit only.  It is expected that all make-up and hair preparation of the wedding party will be done prior to coming to the church.  The facility is not fitted out for this kind of activity.  The wedding outfit cannot be left at the church prior to wedding party’s arrival.  Any clothes or valuables left before or after the ceremony in the church are not insured, therefore, the church and its representatives cannot be held responsible.  During the ceremony, the rooms will be locked, and you are advised to have someone watching the gift table.

Without exception, our nursery is not available for use during a wedding due to our child protection policy and insurance restrictions.
Old Mission Wedding Coordinator
Old Mission has a Church Wedding Coordinator on staff that will assist couples and their wedding party during the rehearsal and the day of the wedding.  Our church wedding coordinator is in charge and responsible for the rehearsal and the day of the ceremony even if a couple chooses to hire their own private wedding planner.  The church wedding coordinator will organize other access times for flowers, photographers, etc.

In the absence of the Old Mission clergy, the coordinator is the authority regarding authorized use of the facility.
Outside Vendors
Wedding vendors include outside wedding coordinators, videographers, photographers, etc.  All of the vendors will follow the Old Mission Wedding policy and guidelines and follow the direction of the Church Wedding Coordinator and Clergy.  Failure to do so, will give up their rights to do future events at Old Mission.
Wedding Music
All music is under the guidance of the clergy officiating the service and the lead church musician involved with the wedding.  Old Mission values live music instead of recorded music.  The church organist, or a substitute of her choosing, must be used in any service where our organ is played.  Our grand piano is also available.  No music may be photocopied at Old Mission.  Soloists and other musicians are paid separately according to your arrangements with them, unless they are on staff at Old Mission.  Please refer to the section containing the church’s wedding music policy for detailed information.
Decorations
All decorations must be attached without damaging pews—no tape, tacks, nails, or sharp objects. Decorations must be removed immediately after the service. Please avoid candle drips, flower stains, or damage to church furnishings. Flower petals may only be dropped if a runner is used; silk petals are allowed without a runner. Be sure someone is assigned to clean up petals and flowers before leaving. Furniture may only be moved with permission from clergy or the church administrator; the piano may not be moved. We appreciate your care for the building—damage or misuse may result in loss of deposit.

Candles
The church provides all candles to be used in the candelabra at minimal cost.  We have single candleholders and two tall freestanding candelabra.  These are oil-filled candles and require caution so the oil does not spill and become a fire hazard.

Rice, Bubbles, and Birdseed
The above items  may not  be used to “shower” the wedding couple.  There are several safety and custodial reasons for this rule.  Please check with the clergy officiating the wedding for other ideas and suggestions.
Photography/Videography
To keep the reverence of the occasion there are a few requirements for the photographer/videographer. Please share this with the professional if you decide to utilize one of these.
  • The photographer can arrive at the times listed by the Old Mission Wedding Coordinator
  • No flash photos are permitted following the processional but may be taken during the couple’s recessional. Also, please instruct family and friends not to take flash pictures during the ceremony.
  • Video cameras may be used and the wedding coordinator will assist in directing their location.
  • All pre-wedding photography must cease ½ hour before the ceremony.
  • Remember that this is a public facility, as well as a house of worship.  Posing for photographs must not impede access to or egress from the church.
  • The church does not offer a professional video of the wedding. The couple is responsible for providing personnel for this service. The wedding coordinator will provide the appropriate details on camera placement. Livestream is available for an extra cost of $100.
