He’s sort of like the Wizard of Oz. You may not see him often, but behind the scenes Larry Bentson keeps very busy. The church’s Business Manager keeps the finances in order, pays the bills, processes the payroll and generates financial reports for Old Mission.
This number cruncher, who’s been on staff for a decade, came to Old Mission selling software. After convincing the church that they needed an upgrade, Larry also convinced them to hire him as a financial guru. “When I was here training the staff on the software, the church was using a temp service for the financial activities,” he says. “[Former pastor] Jim Darby and I went to lunch, and the rest is history.”
Thanks to Larry, computer-savvy congregants can utilize direct deposit for their contributions so that they never have to write a check. He’s also helped to reduce costs by implementing electronic financial statements for people who wish to receive updates by e-mail.
The Kansas City native served as an accountant for Sears for 28 years before “retiring” to operate his own accounting practice.
