One of our members recalled a former minister who was concerned about coming to Old Mission. He thought folks must not care much for the church. "Why would you think that?" he was asked. The minister said, "The building is pretty run-down." Our member looked more closely at the facility he had grown accustomed to and agreed they had let it go. Paint was peeling, glass was cracked. The yard may have needed mowing. It was, in fact, showing some stress.
Last night, the finance committee met and received requests from the trustees. The trustees have responsibility for the building and grounds. Both committees are conscientious about their work. They try not to let things fall behind. A couple of years ago we had black smudges forming on the sanctuary ceiling. Problem fixed. We replaced numerous windows in the sanctuary. They had cracked and/or fogged. Problem fixed.
I hope you noticed that the sanctuary was repainted recently and a little color added in specific areas that allowed the architecture of the room to "pop".
Now we have some more work to do, some visible and some not so much. We are looking to replace the (very faded) sanctuary cushions. As we were doing work over the winter, it became obvious that outside windows and soffits need painting and some areas need repair. A vent from the HVAC has to be relocated, and a new sump pump is needed.
Our church home is a facility that needs constant attention. We have folks who are doing their best to keep her looking good and working well. This is our "sacred ground", and we never want someone to think we don't care. A number of people volunteer their time and skill to keep her looking good and working well. It is our home, the place from which we do our ministry in the Name of Jesus Christ.
Every Sunday, when you put an offering in the plate a portion goes to making sure people come by and say, "You folks must love your church. She looks great!"
